I am stuck for short film ideas............
my ideas are all feature films and i want a short one to make and send off to a competition

I'm only 13 but here's some ideas (or at least some things i do to get ideas)
(1)Go here, "http://www.exposure.co.uk/makers/minute.html". It really got me thinking.
(2)Do a video for a school project. My friends and I find it easier to make a short movie when what we need to do is all laid out in front of us.
(3)A movie about a guy in a coffee shop who sees things as they go by and then those things he sees get intertwined.
(4)If all else fails, rip off the blair witch project.

If you have nothing to say, why make films at all? For the weight and prestige the title brings? You will fail.

uhh, um, like...you know, uh.....moviesare like my life.....uh, whoa, cool camera angle.........
These kids armed with cameras are people with the determination to create something great, N F T , everyone has to start somewhere and without these kids with cameras how the hell is anyone going to enter the film business?
Sure they(we) may make films with no feeling, but no one has the same ideals and we all learn from our mistakes. We need the experience to get anywhere. If only people with a hugely pretentious and deep and meaningful statement went in to movie making it would be an unpopular profession. Sure films need meaning, they need thought, but is there any harm in playing around with ideas to find your true message?
How many people in this forum can say that every short film, trailer, feature, promo video and advert has had the true essence of your fears, concerns and motions? Not many, but I'm sure they have been pleased with their work and learnt alot about the art form.
Movies aren't my life but they are something that gives me passion and inspiration, something that I like to do with my spare time and idealy my career. Why should us "kids" give up our passions and our ambitions? We admire Rodreiguez's innovation in making a movie for no money, and tarantinos ability to rip off other movies and get credit for his masterpieces....wait... hang on...
It's all a bunch of tree huggin hippy crap, dudes.

Unfortunately, "movie success" usually goes hand in hand with "stupid, dumb & bad movie". If making your friends laugh is all you want to express, stop trying. You may make a 'funny' movie, but it will lack importance. You must have certain things you are trying to express or say with your film. Otherwise, what's the point? Filmmaking is too hard for all that shit.
Flmmaking is the greatest art form, and it should be about exploring and expressing your own personal concerns, interests, fears and obsessions.
Fuck the audience, and stop trying to determine thier emotions through bloody Tarantinoesque gun shootouts, or 15 pages in a row of "witty, cool" dialogue. It's all been done before. Why do it again and again, and again.......................
Why has filmmaking become such a popular trend among teens armed with cameras (and with nothing to say)? Thank you Robert Rodriguez and Quentin "uhh, um, like...you know, uh.....movies are like my life.....uh, whoa, cool camera angle" Tarantino! I'm convinced it's all their fucking fault.

Do it to be immersed in an obsession for a few months.
For the drive and painful experience of squeeching brain thoughts/mind shapes out into the world. See that? Thats was in my head.(Well almost) Magic, and manifestation. PURE WILL POWER. These are the things Ive been thinking about for since forever.

Tarantino? Yeah sure everyone says he's not original...yes he is. His little montage's and tributes to other filmmakers are pretty neat.....
BUT why make a film about films? (which is what Tarantino seems to do) What the hell has that got to do with anything? It reminds me of the kid at school who is asked to write a poem, and cant think of anything. So he writes a poem about not being able to write a poem, or about the process of writing.
Arse. But quite entertaining and self satisfactory ARSE.

I'd much rather watch a Tarantino flick than a Greenaway or a (yawn) Derek Jarman (apologies if I've spelt his name wrong).
Did anyone actually watch 'Blue' when they screened it a couple of years ago on Channel4 in the UK?? And did you enjoy it?
I agree that a film must have substance and if it has something to say, well hell, say it with attitude.
To coin a phrase: "Forget black lesbians in wheelchairs ... let's blow something up"
But blow it up with conviction, right. Not just cos u think it will look cewl. Hell, it's gotta *sound* cewl too, that's probably more important?
What am I saying? Uh, '... people are the same wherever you go ...' sort of. I agree with both opposing forces. What does that make me??
Hmmm... must investigate that premise in my next script...
Kids with camcorders, fret not ... one Mr Francis Coppola commends you in the documentary 'Hearts of Darkness' about the making of 'Apocalypse Now'.
After all, grown-up directors are just wanna be kids with camcorders again.

Did you know 'Heart of Darkness' was the book by Joseph Conrad that Apocalypse Now was (loosely) based on?
Anywho.
Why is it so many of you guys insist on condemning Tarantino? After all he did what most of you talk about day in and day out (ie making a bloody successful film on a low budget). I admit that he pinched scenes from other movies but give the guy credit, he put them into his movies really well and came up with a fucking good film. Reservoir Dogs may have been a conglomeration of other ideas but there's little doubt that it spawned a whole new way of film making. All of a sudden you didn't need massive explosions, an outrageous budget and luxurious locations to make a hit film. All it took was some good acting, an excellent soundtrack and a good script. Tarantino didn't go overboard on effects or hire some prima donna actor he made his film with what so many of us lack TALENT.
Phew, I think I better go and lie down!
